New podcast: ‘The Language of Neurodiversity’

Jessica Aiston, one of the postdoctoral researchers on the project, recently appeared on the ‘Lexis’ podcast to discuss issues relating to language and neurodiversity. This episode was a special student takeover edition, where two A Level English Language students at Eltham Hill school took over the role of the interviewer.

The episode covers topics such as:

• The definition of words like “neurodivergent” “neurotypical” and “neurodiversity”
• How the language we use to talk about autism has changed over time
• The difference between identity first and person first language and why it matters
• Semantic reclamation and language play (e.g., “neurospicy” “tism”)
• The importance of neurodiversity-affirming and autism-centred research approaches

You can find the podcast on Spotify, PocketCasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
